Abstract

The paper offers a criticism from the ontological point of view of Kripke's essentialism concerning natural kind-terms and the so called theoretical indetification. It begins with a brief account of Kripke's view of essence and theoretical identification. A comparison of Kripke's essentialism with that of B. Enc should show the advantages of the philosophically grounded essentialism as overcoming the essentialism based on Kripke's formal semantics for modal logic. In conclusion a nonkripkean conception of essentialism is outlined.
