Abstract

The paper discusses the conditions and circumstances of the origins of the first philosophical journal in Slovakia. Its first issue appeared in 1940 and was published by the contemporary cultural and educational institution Matica slovenská. The author examines the main spheres, on which the journal focused at that time: epistemology, ontology, history of philosophy, especially that of Slovak one, and also the topical issues of Slovak society, first of all the problems of nation and nationalism. A special attention is paid to official religious philosophy contrary to the growing influence of rationalistic and scientific thought, represented by that time mainly by Igor Hrušovský. The renaissance ofthe journal in 1945 and destruction is mentioned as well and finally the development of other Slovak philosophical journals after 1948.
