Abstract

The paper outlines the issues of freedom and choice as the fundamental values of democracy. Since an attitude of a person to himself/herself, to society and transcendence plays a more important role in history than the political organization of society does, the relation represents a determining factor of values on which freedom and choice are substantially dependent. From an outline of the structure of knowledge common to ancient Greek thought, Christian thinking and contemporary science, the paper passes through to an assertion of essential correlation between creation, knowledge and love as the identification with the other. Thus free choice is no more a superficial selection. It disposes an order which springs out from an openess to transcendence as the identification with the other.
